I am thinking about buying one of these but by reading the reviews it sounds like this company is milking 1980′s engraving technology. I imagine that if someone came out with a modern version of a machine like this it would cost $1000′s. It’s a shame this company is just milking old technology and doesn’t have a machine that is versatile and uses a computers already available power. From what I see of this machine I would rather spend $1000 or more on a machine that allows you to do real design. For now I can’t see spending a lot of money on an obsolete machine that is only marketed to suck money out of the buyer. This company has the technology in place but chooses to use 30 year old technology just to suck money out of buyers.

  • You need to be a smart consumer, know that PC is not going to sell all of thier images for 70$ Those who feel ripped off should learn to read better. It says it allows it not that you can cut everything! Learn about the Cricut and cartridges first don’t jump on the band wagon and get all pissy that you didn’t understand! GEEEZ people!

Considering that a greater proportion of people involved in the creative arts prefer Macs, it’s ridiculous that there is no Mac version of this software. Worse yet, this software is the only way to update the Cricut firmware.

Provo could at least release a small OSX driver-like software to perform such updates, or better yet do what the Slice does and put the updates on newer cartridges.

The FAQ on Provo’s site claims that “several voices” have been asking about a Mac version and that they are seriously looking into it. But it has said that for months and months, probably even a year or two now.

There are 75 million users of OSX worldwide. If only one in three thousand of those users owns a Cricut, that means Provo Craft is ignoring 25,000 existing customers.

    Not acceptable.

  • I was so excited to use the Design Studio until I realized that you can’t cut anything from any cartridge you don’t own. This is just a huge gimic to get you to by more very expessive cartridges. Unfortunately I didn’t do my research before I read the tiny tiny print that says “works with the cartridges you already have.” But hopefully I can save some one spending more on an utterly useless product.

I own the Cricut Design Studio software and wanted to combine a tree from Joys of the Season with a window cut out from Beyond Birthdays. My problem was that when I welded the two, it cut the tree out of the card rather than cutting the window (negative space) leaving the tree in tact (positive space) to make a card similar to the ones built in to the cartridges. Seems like a simple enough creative task for this software to do, but obviously, someone didn’t think we would be that creative. OR they just don’t hire people who can think creatively like we do!

As the software is right now, I find it very “clunky” to work with. I have not found the book that comes with the software nor the help feature to be very helpful in finding out HOW to do something. It does a great job of telling me WHAT it can do, and how “fantastic” the features are, but I have yet to find out the HOW to do it part.

Maybe I’m just too used to using current technology graphic software and their software just wasn’t designed for that much creative thinking.

My advice: DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY or TIME until they figure out a way to make it more versatile.
