Do u need cricut cartridges to use the cricut design studio and if not do you need to pay to get images?

I am getting the Cricut Design Studio in a few days and i saw that you can get all the images in the Cricut library with the Design Studio but then i scrolled down on the same page and it said cartridges needed for Design Studio. I am realy confused.And if you don’t need the cartridges to u have to pay for the images you get off the Design Studio?
Please answer if you know.

Search through the Cricut Cartridge Library for the image you are looking for.You will be able to search through thousands of images using an easy keyword search option. With updates the Cricut Design Studio software will let you explore the newest cartridges available.

The library previews what is available on the cartridge, you need the cartridge to make the cuts.

Have you considered the Cricut Gypsy?
