Can you create your own designs using the Cricut?

If you design something on a piece of paper the only way to design it using DS is to use the Cricut
cartridges. So lets say you want to make a house you would use triangles and squares, weld them together to make a house. http://okieladybugsscrapnmore.blogspot.com/ has been able to make a lot of different things using shapes. Here she’s made a tractor:

If what you have designed can not be narrowed down to shapes welded together then the answer would be no.
There are third party softwares: Make the Cut and Sure-Cuts-A-Lot that allow you to cut fonts and shapes from your computer. I use SCAL and was able to write my signature, scan it into my computer, use Inkscape (which is a free program) to turn into a svg file, import it into SCAL and then cut it with my Cricut
