most of the function keys won’t work on my Create A Critter Cricut cartridge?

Author: I just opened the Create A Critter cartridge for the first time. I can only use the base shape, shift shape and layer 1 – they all work fine. however, it comes up with the message on screen as N/A when I select layer2, layer 3, accessory, phrase and shadow. HELP!
